TU Delft (DEL) is renowned for its high academic quality and social relevance of its research. DEL Delft’s Web Information Systems (WIS) group concentrates its research on engineering and science of the Web. Its research specifically considers the role of Web data in the engineering of Web-based information systems and is aimed at improving the understanding of people’s actions, interests, motivations, and behaviours on the Web, and subsequently leveraging that knowledge to build semantic, personalised and adaptive applications. This includes topics in harvesting, integrating, transforming, analysing, and retrieving Web data, with a focus on the special properties of Web data, e.g., linked, semantic, semi-structured data. The group is known for its work in data science and user modelling for data analytics, applying its expertise in database systems and scalable data management in order to develop query languages for bridging data management and machine learning to remove the systems complexity and make data science more accessible; design novel scalable parallel database operators that are well suited for mixed data management & machine learning pipelines; use and contribute to systems such as Apache Flink, Spark and SystemML, by adding new features or optimisations.

TU Delft leads research activities in all areas of computer science, with industry-acknowledged expertise in data management and data science, engaging large industrial partners, innovators, and startup companies (e.g., Delft Data Science initiative, YES!Delft,). It holds significant expertise in the cross-disciplinary application of Big Data and ML (e.g., health, smart cities), is performing forward-thinking research (e.g., quantum computing, nanobiology), and attracts talent from a vibrant local community (aka the ‘nerdy’ city). Further, DEL actively promotes Open Science and the application of Big Data for addressing societal challenges (e.g., Open Education Award 2018).
